The Limpet
In the early days, Flexifoil
inventors Ray Merry and Andrew Jones, spent many hours testing and talking about their
strange wind inflated wings. The "Limpet", as seen in the photograph, was a temporary
Vinyl sheeting tent/shelter, where equipment was stowed during test sessions. These early
experimental flights were carried out in the North of England in the early '70's where
the weather was often damp and cold. The "Limpet" also provided a welcome wind break.
The early test wings were constructed of Polyethylene with a selection of leading edge
spar materials. Bamboo being a favorite until the duo found fiberglass. Due to
ultra-violet damage, the maximum flying life of the mainly clear "kites" was only 2 or 3
hours! |
